    • Squall is the antisocial leader of your group. He is pessimistic and believes that you don't need to depend on anyone, and if you do, you'll just lose them anyway. He is a powerful SeeD, and fights with the reliable gunblade. During the course of the game, he slowly falls in love with Rinoa, and also begins to open himself to the other characters.

    • Quistis is an instructor at Balamb Garden. She is serious and kind. She thinks she is in love with Squall, but she isn't really. (If I tell you more, it will be a spoiler.) Quistis, however, lacks the leadership qualities to stay an instructor, and becomes a SeeD, like she was since age 15, soon after the beginning of the game.

    • Seifer is an equal to only Squall in fighting power. Although Seifer is very strong, he is very egocentric. Seifer never obeys orders, and never becomes a SeeD at all. Seifer soon becomes Squall's mortal enemy.

    • Zell is another member of SeeD, a martial arts expert. He has parents in Balamb. Zell is kinda punkish. He joined SeeD to take after his grandfather.

    • Selphie is a spunky SeeD, who recently transferred from Trabia Garden to Balamb Garden. She's the happiest character of all. She wants to put up a Garden Festival, and she immediately became in charge of that when she moved to Balamb Garden.

    • Rinoa has nothing to do with Garden. She is the leader of a resistance group fighting Galbadia for Timber's independance. This is a problem, because her father is General Caraway of Galbadia. She quickly falls in love with Squall. Rinoa has a dog named Angelo, who is involved with her super-powerful combine limit break.

    • Irvine is a sharpshooter of Galbadia Garden. Irvine is very confident with both guns and women. Is rather flirty. He falls in love with Selphie, but that's not an important part of the story. He looks like a cowboy, but he makes a pretty bad one.

    • Laguna's story is played in dreams from 17 years in the past. He begins as a Galbadian Soldier, but his true dream is to become a journalist for Timber Maniacs. Later, Laguna moves to Winhill, a quiet country town. There, he settles down as a guy who patrols the town killing monsters, and meets a young girl named Ellone and a woman named Raine. (Whose full stories are spoilers.)
